Trinidad and Tobago high on Third Annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index
Reporters sans frontires - Third Annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index
The greatest press freedom is found in northern Europe (Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands and Norway), which is a haven of peace for journalists. Of the top 20 countries, only three (New Zealand 9th, Trinidad and Tobago 11th and Canada 18th) are outside Europe.
And it is really interesting that this was not reported on in the local press, but the drop in place on the Transparency index was important news for quite a while! What does this say about our press? Are they not interested in blowing this trumpet? Of course, it would definitely put a crimp in the current focus on the lack of transparency, fairness, and the total ineffectuality of the current government for the press to report that somethign good is happening here.
Sometimes I wonder if the local mainstream press here in Trinidad and Tobago has an agenda. But that's stupid - of course the media has an agenda. Everyone does. The intelligent question would be - What is the agenda?

Thought I should point out that the press freedom index you link to & comment on is last year's--the 2005 index is here. T&T again ranks high, in 12th place.
